WADAC athletes out in numbers

The Hampshire Cross Country League returned for another season with the first fixture at Kings Park Bournemouth. The conditions were very mild with ground reasonably dry underfoot. Winchester & District AC athletes travelled in good numbers to compete.

In the Under 13 girls race there emerged a name for the future, Rose Chesterfield ran with a group of six on the first two smaller laps but on the hill on the final lap she decided to accelerate which took her clear of the field and she cruised home 9 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. Rose was backed up by Millie Burgess 16th and Aisling Hitchman 32nd for the team to finish 5th overall. Aslo running for WADAC in the U13G race were Lara Bassett 34th, Emma Shedden 42nd, Jasmine Jones 54t and Erin Willis 78th, which was a very good turn-out.

The Senior, Veteran womens race saw the normal WADAC dominance. International Marathon runner Louise Damen went straight to the front of the race and pushed the pace until Kate Bingle of Aldershot moved ahead to win, but Louise was well clear and finished a brilliant 2nd, which also gave her first V35 position. Simone Dailey ran very strongly and moved up to 4th position which she held to the finish. Also managing superb top ten placings were new ladies team manager Mel Wilkins 8th and International Triathlete India Lee 10th. This meant WADAC were comfortable team winners in the Senior Womens category which was mirrored by the WADAC Vets team who triumphed in the team event with Damen, Kath Bailey 18th and Karen Hazlitt 35th. Also having a very fine run was Kate Towerton in 12th position in a field of over 150 finishers. The rest of WADAC competitors were Sam Parkinson 40th Abbey Connor 42nd, Natalie Cain 46th, Jo Jefferies 57th, Sarah Lawson 63rd, Sue Tue 64th, Charlotte Hoskins 74th, Alison Fenwick 85th, Joy Radford 90th and Madeline Vosser 118th.

In the Under 13 boys race it was again pleasing to see so many WADAC black & gold vests in attendance. The U13B team were an impressive 2nd in the team event and this was down to the superb packing by Harry Harvey 7th, Charlie Kyle 8th and Michael Shingleton-Smith 10th all having first rate runs. In 17th position was Rose’s brother Ben Chesterfield and also Thomas Briggs 18th and Charlie Cox 22nd all making the top 25. Other U13B WADAC performances- Matthew Duckering 32nd, Ben Yates 40th, Toby Pace 46th, Ben Schofield 53rd, Oscar Hoult 62nd, Charlie Hutchings 63rd, Matthias Truchon 65th, Patrick  Hewson 67th, Connor Dutton 81st.

There was a fine run by Alice Calder in the Under 17 womens race battling to 5th position. The WADAC team was completed by Grace Mann and Poppy Clements 2nd. This gave WADAC 4th place in a competitive category. Tallulah Jeffes 25th, Gabrielle Spelman 33rd, Isla Allan 35th and Natasha Miles 41st were the other WADAC U17W contributors.

Doug Scally continued his progression with a determined performance in the Under 15 boys race finishing 11th supported by Sam Roberts 17th and James Medley 23rd WADAC U17M team were 3rd. Also finishing in the U15B race were Dominic Exworthy 37th, Theo Roberts 42nd and Joseph Baker 63rd.

There were only two WADAC athletes in the Under 17 mens race so they didn’t complete a team but Toby Woods 17th and Ben Ringrose-Voase 23rd had good runs.

Improving in every race Hannah Foster 14th was first finisher for WADAC in the Under 15 girls event, the team was concluded by Isabella Beck 120th and Lily Neate 21st which gave WADAC 3rd team place. Also running in the U15G race were Katie Nicholson 40th, Tamsin Hoult 47th and Sophie Torrance 50th.

In the final race, the Senior/Vet men race WADAC were a little light of their top performers but George King still had a very good run in a field of around 250. Also in the top 100 and in the scoring WADAC scoring team were Richard Parr 40th , Richard Bidgood 45th (6th Vet) Danny Kyle 94th And Sam Appleton 98th, this gave WADAC 6TH team position in Division 1. The Vets men team of Bidgood, Kyle and Franklyn Young 130th were also 6th team. Other WADAC Humza Ahmed 99th; Alex Whiting 114th: Dave Vosser 142nd: Mike Chambers 144th : Guy Hoskins 166th and Peat Allan 175th.

In the under 11 guest races James Lewis followed up his Wessex League victory with an emphatic win here in the boys race, parking in well were Tom Grote 5th : Evan Jeremiah 6th ; Harry Gaster 7th and Stan Parkinson 8th. In the girls race Caitie Croft had a fine run in 7th with Eva Akerman 13th, Lucy Jones 14th and Safiya Hussain 15th also well to the foe.

The next match is in November at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield.
