Winchesters Young Athletes achieve County Honours!
This has been a hugely successful season for Junior Athletics at Winchester and District Athletics Club which has seen the club winning the Wessex Young Athletes Track & Field League for the first time in their history and also gaining promotion in both the Upper and Lower Youth Development Leagues. So it was great to have some of the clubs most talented young athletes gain the additional honour of being selected to represent Hampshire in the annual Inter Counties competition at Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston, South London.
This was a good chance for 6 of Winchester’s most talented young athletes to gain individual representative experience. The Hampshire Boys and Girls U13 Teams both competed against 13 other Counties from across the South of England finishing 6th in both tightly fought competitions.
Performance of the day came from Erin McBriar in the Girls discus where she threw 26.43m smashing her own Winchester Club record by over 2 metres, taking third place in the competition and moving up to 5th in the UK rankings. Erin also finished third in the shot with another PB of 8.27m.
Oscar Webb continued his great season with a second place in High Jump (1.60m) second only to a new UK leading height, he also finished 4th in Long Jump with a leap of 4.77m. Grace Weeks finished 5th in 200m (30.7s) and 4th in the 70m Hurdles with a time of 11.9s. Stanley Parkinson finished 4th in the boys 1500m race with a time of 4 mins 55s.
Also competing were Sam Nicholson (Discus) and Kirsten Hazelwood (Javelin) both of whom performed well in their first year at this age group. Showing great promise no doubt both of these young athletes will be back to challenge again next season in their senior year and will have benefited from the experience.
Winchester has further County representation to follow later in the Season when the Hampshire U15 Team competes in their match at Oxford on 7th September.
