Following on from a very successful 2018 which resulted in English Schools selection, Kanya Mtshweni (coach: George Ogilvie) of Winchester & District Athletics Club has been selected to take part in two international events this year.
On the 19th May, Loughborough University hosted its annual Loughborough International which included an invitational U20 110m hurdles event. The highest ranking U20s in the UK were asked to take part.
On the 24th July, Kanya was selected to participate in the Welsh Athletics International competition where he gained his first England vest and competed as part of the South England team. In a race won by a guest hurdler representing Qatar, Kanya finished in a strong 5th position, just 6/100th behind third place.
His other successes this season include becoming Hampshire U20 Champion, finishing 2nd in the South of England U20 Championships and finishing 4th in the final of the England Athletics U20 Championships. Kanya is currently ranked 11th in the UK in the 110m hurdles for U20 men.
Next year he will compete as a senior and will move to study at Cardiff. We look forward to tracking his progress and welcoming him back to Winchester during the university holidays.
