Information for Parents

Junior Pathway

To help parents and athletes understand the general path that will be taken as juniors progress through the age groups, we have developed a Junior Pathway document.

This pathway displays the usual path for junior progression, however, there will be exceptions to this and the interests of the athlete will always come first.

Juniors are boys and girls from school year 4 to school year 11. Here is some useful information for parents. Please see the questions and answers below for more information about juniors.

  • Your child needs comfortable and warm / waterproof sports clothing.

    - Spiked running shoes are not required initially

    • Always bring a drink – water is the best option, fizzy drinks aren't suitable

  • They are fully qualified coaches, having completed the necessary courses provided by England Athletics. The sessions are also supported by parent volunteers, who make a vital contribution in ensuring that we can take a large pool of athletes.

If you are interested in becoming a parent helper or taking any coaching qualifications, please would you speak with one of the coaches.

  • We welcome all abilities. However, it is helpful for us to know in which event your child is interested, especially if he / she already has some experience of athletics, as there may be space for particular events but not for others

  • See the pathway for juniors. This pathway displays the usual path for junior progression, however, there will be exceptions to this and the interests of the athlete will always come first.

  • We are a competitive club and expect our members to compete in at least 5 meetings each year.

If an athlete does not compete for the club over a reasonable period of time and there are no legitimate reasons why such an athlete is unable to compete, the group coach will ask the athlete to leave the group so someone else from the waiting-list can join the group.

Athletes who compete for the club will be given priority over non-competing athletes when allocating places for other groups.

  • Visit the Wessex League and the Lower Youth Development League (YDL) pages for more information on the junior track & field competitions.

  • No, please contact us before turning up to training. Some training groups have waiting lists in operation and so we need to make sure that there is room before your child comes along to a training session.

  • Due to very high demand for places, the club operates a waiting-list for certain training groups for school years 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Recently, the waiting times for places have dramatically decreased due to more volunteers coming forward to assist in the sessions.

If your child is in school year 4, 5, 6 or 7 and wishes to be added to a waiting-list, please complete the juniors enquiry form.

Please also use the form for:

    • children currently in school year 3 that wish to be added to the waiting list for the start of school year 4. Please wait until the summer term of Year 3 before contacting us.

    • Children in Year 8 (currently no wiating list)

You will then be kept informed as to when spaces are likely to be available.
